Bradenton hospitals offer top care close to home.

State of the art is the operative phrase to describe hospitals serving the Bradenton area.

Manatee Memorial Hospital’s four-story, curved-glass patient tower offers private rooms with sweeping views, Internet connections and flat-screen TVs equipped with 90 cable channels. The 156,000-square-foot addition doubled the size of the old hospital, built in the 1950s.

The tower features the latest in hospital design to maximize infection control and treatment options.A 319-bed acute care facility, Manatee Memorial, 206 Second St. E., is owned and operated by a subsidiary of Universal Health Services Inc. and has the county’s only Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

In August 2009, Manatee Memorial’s Heart and Vascular Center opened on the ground floor of the patient tower. The 17,000-square-foot facility includes four cardiac catheterization labs, an accredited chest pain center and 12-bed pretreatment and post-treatment areas. Thirty physicians — including cardiologists, radiologists, vascular surgeons and cardiothoracic surgeons — call the Heart and Vascular Center home.

Also last year, the hospital received two large hyperbaric chambers for the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Treatment Center. The chambers allow for the treatment of serious wounds, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a procedure in which the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen in a pressurized chamber.

Manatee Memorial’s clinical laboratory is undergoing a major remodeling program, which includes a new roof, 3,000 square feet of additional space and a new entryway.

Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, the area’s newest hospital, is part of Manatee Memorial Health System. It has a state licensed Level One Cardiac Catheterization Lab offering a range of minimally invasive procedures to correct heart and artery blockages. Lakewood Ranch Medical Center is the only hospital on the west coast of Florida to receive full Cycle I heart failure accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers.

The hospital also offers Bright Vista Drug and Alcohol Medical Stabilization Service. The program, the only one of its kind on the west coast of Florida, is for those who have chosen to overcome dependency on drugs or alcohol.
Opened in 2004, Lakewood Ranch Medical Center at 8330 Lakewood Ranch Blvd. sits on a 30-acre medical campus and is just a few miles from Interstate 75.
The hospital offers a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient services including a modern, bright, obstetrics unit and cardiovascular imaging lab.

In a recent national patient survey, the Ranch Medical Center was rated the best hospital in Manatee and Sarasota counties.

Blake Medical Center, at 2020 59th St. W., has taken its luxurious Joint Care Center to new heights recently by being recognized for excellence by two independent evaluators. BlueCross BlueShield designated the hospital a Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacement, as well as spine surgery. Blake also was recently awarded disease-specific care certification for knee and hip replacement by the Joint Commission.
Also new for this 383-bed hospital is a designated Cancer Care Center and a Cancer Resource Room offering cancer patients, their friends and families a place for research, support, education and exercise classes, or quiet reflection. The cancer program also boasts a dedicated nurse navigator to assist patients through the entire customized care plan and a physician team offering the latest cancer treatment, close to home.

Blake’s low emergency room wait times have garnered a lot of attention since the hospital began posting current average ER wait times on the hospital’s website (www.BlakeMedicalCenter.com), via texting “ER” to 23000, and on a billboard on Cortez Road.

No one wants to be sick, but if the need for hospitalization occurs, Bradenton’s three hospitals are not only ready to serve but can match the level of care found in much larger metropolitan areas.
